Can pregnant women eat shrimp? Giving birth is how we ensure that the human race is protected from extinction, that’s why we pay so much attention to even the slightest details concerning pregnancy. Pregnant woman’s primary focus is diet. Whatever she eats will affect her baby whether in a good way or a wrong way.
When I was pregnant, I had to make a hard choice, which is letting go of my favorite food to make sure my baby gets everything that he needs, so his body fully develops. Why is it a hard choice? Because I’m a food-lover.
Right now, People are concerned about eating shrimp while pregnant.
In order to not make it hard for pregnant women out there, I’ll avoid talking about how fantastic shrimp is. Not that I can’t, but if I was pregnant and shrimp got banned from my diet, I’d be devastated.

Can You Eat Shrimp if You’re a Pregnant Woman?
Despite all the concerns out there about shrimp, you can indeed eat shrimp while pregnant but only if the shrimp is well cooked.
The problem with Fish is that it contains a metal called mercury. If the amount of mercury in the blood circulating in your body is high enough, it can cause big troubles for you and your baby.
There are no fish without mercury. Naturally, mercury comes from the water the fish swims in, whether it’s the ocean, the river or even small lakes. They even keep the mercury they take from the other fish when they eat them.
But that doesn’t mean that pregnant women can’t eat fish what so ever, but only those with low levels of mercury.
After months of research, the FDA has concluded that shrimp, alongsideother types of fish like tilapias, salmon,and cod, are safe to be eaten by women during their pregnancy.
Now that we confirmed that shrimp is safe, we can talk about how excellent shrimp is and how it benefits you,and your baby. To make it simple I have a made a list:
- When your baby’s brain forms and develops, it consumes a fatty acid known as the omega-3. So if you want a higher chance of having a highly intelligent baby, as well as reducing the possibility of having postpartum depression, you must eat omega-6, lucky for you the shrimp has plenty of those.
- Some studies suggest that the right amount of shrimp can help avoid premature delivery.
- Your baby’s body needs protein to grow, especially the muscles. Fortunately, the shrimp is actually high in protein
- Shrimp also bring to your body a fair amount of iron, which helps women with Anemia.
A recent survey conducted by the FDA show that 50% of pregnant women eat less than 2 ounces of fish a week. This is bad because the FDA recommends that they eat 2-3 serving of seafood, equal to 8 to 12 ounces every week. As long as it is low in mercury of course.So, if you want to avoid this issue just eat shrimp.
Again, we must remind you that the shrimp needs to be well cooked. A lot of problems await those who eat raw shrimp.
A raw shrimp will have thousands of bacteria and parasites that can’t be seen by our eyes alone. Only heat can kill them. That why you need to cook it as long as it takes. I know it’s hard since overcooking shrimp will make it hard, but it’s worth it.
There are signs you can look for that makes cooking shrimp so much easier. Mainly it’s the shape of the shrimp before and after it cooked. Here’s a list of what you should look for:
- If the shrimp curls into an o-shape, then it’s overcooked.
- If it turns from N to C-shape, that it’s perfectly cooked and you may as well eat it.
- If the shrimp has a straight form, then that’s a sign that it’s undercooked.
Other than its form, you can also pay close attention to its color; a well-cooked shrimp should be pink and milky white.
Is it Safe to Eat Shrimp While Breastfeeding?
Don’t get so happy after you deliver the baby, you still going to breastfeed him so you must keep a balanced diet.
If you’re one of those women,who enjoy raw fish than you may eat them after your pregnancy is over. Of course, the shrimp is still on the menu.
According to the FDA, women who breastfeed shouldn’t eat more than 12 oz a week. Too much mercury will pass through the breast milk to the baby.
